The Lord’s Day

February 28, 2010

Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered,

and let those who hate Him flee before Him.

(Psalm 68:1)

  Prelude

  Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship                                               Psalm 145:13–18

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.

The Lord sustains all who fall

And raises up all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all look to You,

And You give them their food in due time.

You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His deeds.

The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,

To all who call upon Him in truth.

  Public Confession

Our praise of You, O Lord, brings to mind our struggles with sin. Therefore, we ask for forgiveness; we ask for mercy. For our sinful speech and thoughts, we seek forgiveness. For our sinful attitudes and actions, we ask forgiveness. We rejoice in our Savior, and we rest in Him alone. We give thanks for His work on our behalf.

  Words of Assurance                                                 Titus 3:4-7

When the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]   The Catechism of the Church in Geneva

Now that Christ has ascended to heaven, has He therefore ceased to be with us?

On the contrary, in the Great Commission, He has engaged to be with us even to the end of the world.

What do we mean when we say that Christ is sitting at the right hand of the Father?

These words mean that the Father bestowed upon Him the dominion of heaven and earth, so that He governs all things.

But what is meant by “right hand?”

It is an expression taken from earthly rulers who place at their right hands those appointed to rule with them.

How, then, are we to understand this phrase when applied to the risen Christ?

We mean nothing more than what Paul says, namely, that Christ has been appointed head of the Church, and raised above all principalities, and has obtained a name which is above every name.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading                                                        Psalm 26

Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity,

And I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.

Examine me, O Lord, and try me;

Test my mind and my heart.

For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes,

And I have walked in Your truth.

I do not sit with deceitful men,

Nor will I go with pretenders.

I hate the assembly of evildoers,

And I will not sit with the wicked.

I shall wash my hands in innocence,

And I will go about Your altar, O Lord, that I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving and declare all Your wonders.

O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house

And the place where Your glory dwells.

Do not take my soul away along with sinners,

Nor my life with men of bloodshed in whose hands is a wicked scheme, and whose right hand is full of bribes.

But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;

Redeem me, and be gracious to me.

My foot stands on a level place;

In the congregations I shall bless the Lord.
