  Public Confession

O God, we come before You with confidence and make this confession without reservations. We know You will hear us and forgive our sins.

Forgive us, heavenly Father, for straying from the path of righteousness. Our steps have been wrongly motivated at times. Forgive us for using our words to tear down, rather than to build up. Our speech is often without patience and charity.

Forgive us for our lack of compassion, kindness, and longsuffering. We sometimes fail to imitate our Savior in these matters. And forgive us for thinking of You wrongly as we have considered our circumstances.

  Words of Assurance                                             Titus 2:11-14

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

*Doxology                                                                          No. 731

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host:

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

*Declaring Our Faith                  The Larger Catechism (21, 22)

Did man continue in that estate wherein God at first created him?

Our first parents being left to the freedom of their own will, through the temptation of Satan, transgressed the commandment of God in eating the forbidden fruit; and thereby fell from the estate of innocence wherein they were created.

Did all mankind fall in that first transgression?

The covenant being made with Adam as a public person, not for himself only, but for his posterity, all mankind descending from him by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in that first transgression.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading                                      Proverbs 10:1-12

A wise son makes a father glad,

But a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

Ill-gotten gains do not profit,

But righteousness delivers from death.

The Lord will not allow the righteous to hunger,

But He will reject the craving of the wicked.

Poor is he who works with a negligent hand,

But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely,

But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.

Blessings are on the head of the righteous,

But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

The memory of the righteous is blessed,

But the name of the wicked will rot.

The wise of heart will receive commands,

But a babbling fool will be ruined.

He who walks in integrity walks securely,

But he who perverts his ways will be found out.

He who winks the eye causes trouble,

And a babbling fool will be ruined.

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,

But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Hatred stirs up strife,

But love covers all transgressions.
