The Lord’s Day

October 23rd, 2011

God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm! (Psalms 47.5–7)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 24

The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,

for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.

Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?

And who shall stand in his holy place?

He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.

He will receive blessing from the LORD

and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Such is the generation of those who seek him,

who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O gates!

And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!

Lift up your heads, O gates!

And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory!

Public Confession From Psalms 38 & 69

O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath nor chasten me in your hot displeasure! For Your arrows pierce me deeply and Your hand presses me down.
There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your anger nor any health in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head, like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. My wounds are foul and festering because of my foolishness. O God, You know my foolishness and my sins are not hidden from You. Let not those who wait for You, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed because of me. Let not those who seek You be confounded because of me, O God of Israel.

Words of Assurance Isaiah 1.18-19

Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD:

though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;

though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.

Question 35. What does it mean that he was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary?

Answer: That God’s eternal Son, who is and continues true and eternal God, took upon himself the very nature of man of the flesh and blood of the virgin Mary, by the operation of the Holy Spirit, that he might also be the true seed of David, like unto his brethren in all things, sin excepted.

Question 36. What benefit do you receive from the holy conception and birth of Christ?

Answer: That he is our mediator, and with his innocence and perfect holiness covers, in the sight of God, my sin wherein I was conceived and brought forth.

Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading Psalm 52

Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?

The steadfast love of God endures all the day.

Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.

You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right.

You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.

But God will break you down forever;

He will snatch and tear you from your tent;

he will uproot you from the land of the living.

The righteous shall see and fear,

and shall laugh at him, saying, “See the man who would not make God his refuge,

But trusted in the abundance of his riches

and sought refuge in his own destruction!”

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God.

I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever.

I will thank you forever, because you have done it.

I will wait for your name, for it is good, in the presence of the godly.
