The Lord’s Day

April 10, 2011

For the word of the Lord is upright, and all His work is done in faithfulness.

(Psalm 33:4)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 68:33–35

To Him who rides upon the highest heavens, which are from ancient times; behold, He speaks forth with His voice, a mighty voice.

Ascribe strength to God; His majesty is over Israel and His strength is in the skies.

O God, You are awesome from Your sanctuary. The God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to the people.

Blessed be God!

Public Confession

Forgive our transgressions, heavenly Father, even those committed in our ignorance. Cause us to be grieved by our sin, but confident in Your unfailing promise of pardon. We ask that You would cause us to speak words of truth only and dwell on that which is pure.

Words of Assurance Romans 3:2124

But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.

What comfort do we find in the assurance of our bodily resurrection?

That my body, being raised by the power of Christ, shall be reunited with my soul, and made like unto the glorious body of Christ.

What comfort do we find in the promise of everlasting life?

That I shall inherit perfect salvation, which “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man” to conceive, that I might praise God forever.

*Responsive Reading Psalm 90

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

You turn man back into dust and say, “Return, O children of men.”

For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it passes by, or as a watch in the night.

You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; in the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew.

In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; toward evening it fades and withers away.

For we have been consumed by Your anger and by Your wrath we have been dismayed.

You have placed our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence.

For all our days have declined in Your fury; we have finished our years like a sigh.

As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for soon it is gone and we fly away.

Who understands the power of Your anger and Your fury, according to the fear that is due You?

So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.

Do return, O Lord; how long will it be? And be sorry for Your servants.

O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us, and the years we have seen evil.

Let Your work appear to Your servants and Your majesty to their children.

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; and confirm for us the work of our hands;

Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

THROUGH EVERY AGE, ETERNAL GOD

Based on Psalm 90

Through ev’ry age, eternal God,

Thou art our rest, our safe abode;

High was Thy throne, e’er heav’n was made,

Or earth Thy humble footstool laid.

Long hadst Thou reigned ere time began,

Or dust was fashioned into man;

And long Thy kingdom shall endure,

When earth and time shall be no more.

But man, weak man, is born to die,

Made up of guilt and vanity:

Thy dreadful sentence, Lord, was just—

Return, ye sinners, to your dust.”

Death, like an overflowing stream,

Sweeps us away; our life’s a dream—

An empty tale—a morning flow’r,

Cut down and wither’d in an hour!

Teach us, O Lord, how frail is man;

And kindly lengthen out the span,

Till, cleansed by grace, we all may be

Prepared to die, and dwell with Thee.
