The Lord’s Day

August 16, 2009

By awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, O God of our salvation,

You who are the trust of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea.

(Psalm 65:5)

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship                                                     Psalm 16:5–9

The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup;

You support my lot.

The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;

Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.

I will bless the Lord who has counseled me;

Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.

I have set the Lord continually before me;

Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;

My flesh also will dwell securely.

Public Confession

Heavenly Father, we do look forward to that day when we will join Your holy angels in hymns of praise. In this life we are burdened with sin, and we long to be free from sin’s presence. Please forgive our transgression now for the sake of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Fill us with gladness as we consider His work on our behalf.

Words of Assurance                                          Isaiah 30:18, 19

Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you, and therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the Lord is a God of justice; how blessed are all those who long for Him. O people in Zion, inhabitant in Jerusalem, you will weep no longer. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer you.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]   The Order and Discipline of the Church

What principle should guide the officers in their organization?

We believe that although it is useful and good for those who govern the churches to establish and set up a certain order among themselves for maintaining the body of the church, they ought always to guard against deviating from what Christ, our only Master, has ordained for us.

What caution must we employ in regard to our worship of God?

We reject all human innovations and all laws imposed on us, in our worship of God, which bind and force our consciences in any way.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading                                                   Psalm 112

Praise the Lord! How blessed is the man who fears the Lord,

Who greatly delights in His commandments.

His descendants will be mighty on earth;

The generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.

Light arises in the darkness for the upright;

He is gracious and compassionate and righteous.

It is well with the man who is gracious and lends;

He will maintain his cause in judgment.

For he will never be shaken;

The righteous will be remembered forever.

He will not fear evil tidings;

His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

His heart is upheld, he will not fear,

Until he looks with satisfaction on his adversaries.

He has given freely to the poor, His righteousness endures forever;

His horn will be exalted in honor.

The wicked will see it and be vexed,

He will gnash his teeth and melt away;

The desire of the wicked will perish.
