The Lord’s
Day
August 30,
2009
Come and see the works of God,
Who is awesome in His deeds toward
the sons of men.
(Psalm 66:5)
Prelude
Apostolic Greeting
*Call to Worship Psalm
30:1–4
I will extol You, O Lord, for
You have lifted me up,
And have not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O Lord my God, I cried to You
for help,
And You healed me.
O Lord, You have brought up
my soul from Sheol;
You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit.
Sing praise to the Lord, you
His godly ones,
And give thanks to His holy name.

Public Confession
O God, You
have given us reason to sing to you with cheerful voices. You have redeemed us
in Christ Jesus. He has accomplished our salvation, and in that we rejoice. For
His sake, forgive our many transgressions and work in us so that we walk humbly
and rightly before You.
Words of Assurance Isaiah
61:10
I will rejoice
greatly in the Lord, my soul will
exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has
wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a
garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

*Declaring Our Faith[†] The Sacrament
of Baptism
Has circumcision been replaced by baptism as the mark by which the people
of God are set apart?
Having abolished circumcision, which was done with
blood, Christ established in its place the sacrament of baptism. By it we are
received into God’s church and set apart from all other people and alien
religions, that we may be dedicated entirely to Him, bearing His mark and sign.
What is chiefly signified in water
baptism?
God signifies to us that just as water washes away
the dirt of the body, so too the blood of Christ does the same thing
internally, in the soul, by the Holy Spirit. It washes and cleanses it from its
sins and transforms us from being the children of wrath into the children of
God.
Pastoral Prayer
*Responsive Reading Psalm
116:1–15
I love the Lord, because He hears my voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live.
The cords of death encompassed me and the terrors of Sheol came upon me; I
found distress and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I beseech You, save my life!”
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yes, our God
is compassionate.
The Lord preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
For You have rescued my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
I shall walk before the Lord in the land of the living.
I believed when I said, “I am greatly afflicted.” I said in my alarm, “All
men are liars.”
What shall I render to the Lord for
all His benefits toward me?
I shall lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.
I shall pay my vows to the Lord, oh may it be in the
presence of all His people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones.
