The Lord’s Day

February 20, 2011

Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He instructs sinners in the way.

He leads the humble in justice, and He teaches the humble His way.

(Psalm 25:8, 9)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 36:7–9

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!

And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.

They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house;

And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights.

For with You is the fountain of life;

In Your light we see light.

Public Confession

Heavenly Father, we are called to be holy, as You are holy. But we have not persevered in righteousness. Please forgive all our transgressions so that we might have fullest joy in our Savior.

Words of Comfort and Assurance Hebrews 12:22–24

You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.

*Declaring Our Faith2 Heidelberg Catechism

In reference to Christ’s atonement, what are we to understand by the words, “He suffered”?

We are to understand that He, all the time that He lived on earth, but especially at the end of His life, sustained in body and soul the wrath of God against the sins of all mankind.

Why was it necessary for Christ to humble Himself even “unto death”?

Christ had to humble Himself unto death because satisfaction of the justice and truth of God could not be made by any other means.

Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading Psalm 47

O clap your hands, all peoples; shout to God with the voice of joy.

For the Lord Most High is to be feared, a great King over all the earth.

He subdues peoples under us and nations under our feet.

He chooses our inheritance for us, the glory of Jacob whom He loves.

God has ascended with a shout, the Lord, with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a skillful psalm.

God reigns over the nations, God sits on His holy throne.

The princes of the people have assembled themselves as the people of the God of Abraham,

For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is highly exalted.
