The Lord’s Day

January 10, 2010

They who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs;

You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy.

(Psalm 65:8)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship                                                   Psalm 103:1–6

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits;

Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;

Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;

Who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle

The Lord performs righteous deeds and judgments for all who are oppressed.

  Public Confession

We thank You, O God, for Your faithfulness. We thank You for Your unfailing Word. Please forgive our angry words, heavenly Father. Make us people who speak with self-control and wisdom. Forgive our wicked thoughts. Make us people who dwell on that which is good and pure. Forgive our lack of compassion for those in need. Make us people with open hearts and helping hands. Forgive our neglect of duty in our homes and relationships. Make us people of dedication, and give us the grace to persevere.

Words of Assurance                                            John 10:27, 28

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]   The Catechism of the Church in Geneva

How do we honor God appropriately?

By placing our whole confidence in Him; and by serving Him our whole life; and by calling upon Him in all our necessities, seeking salvation, and every good thing that can be desired in Him.

How do we put our whole confidence in God?

By knowing Him to be Almighty and perfectly good.

What more is needful?

That each of us should set it down in our minds that God loves us, and is willing to be a Father, and the Author of salvation to us.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading                                                        Psalm 17

Hear a just cause, O Lord, give heed to my cry;

Give ear to my prayer, which is not from deceitful lips.

Let my judgment come forth from Your presence;

Let Your eyes look with equity.

You have tried my heart; You have visited me by night;

You have tested me and You find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.

As for the deeds of men, by the word of Your lips I have kept from the paths of the violent.

My steps have held fast to Your paths. My feet have not slipped.

I have called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;

Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.

Wondrously show Your lovingkindness, O Savior of those who take refuge at Your right hand from those who rise up against them.

Keep me as the apple of the eye;

Hide me in the shadow of Your wings from the wicked who despoil me, my deadly enemies who surround me.

They have closed their unfeeling heart, with their mouth they speak proudly.

They have now surrounded us in our steps;

They set their eyes to cast us down to the ground.

He is like a lion that is eager to tear, and as a young lion lurking in hiding places.

Arise, O Lord, confront him, bring him low;

Deliver my soul from the wicked with Your sword, from men with Your hand, O Lord,

From men of the world, whose portion is in this life, and whose belly You fill with Your treasure;

They are satisfied with children, and leave their abundance to their babes.

As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness; I will be satisfied with Your likeness when I awake.
