The Lord’s Day

January 16, 2011

Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength; we will sing and praise Your power.

(Psalm 21:13)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 33:8–11

Let all the earth fear the Lord;

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

For He spoke, and it was done;

He commanded, and it stood fast.

The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations;

He frustrates the plans of the peoples.

The counsel of the Lord stands forever,

The plans of His heart from generation to generation.

Public Confession

O Lord, we confess that we have fallen short of Your standard in our thoughts, speech, and conduct. We thank You for our salvation in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Please pardon our sins, and equip us to walk rightly before You.

Words of Comfort and Assurance 1 John 3:9

No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

*Declaring Our Faith2 Heidelberg Catechism

What is true faith?

True faith is not only a certain knowledge, but also an assured confidence, which the Holy Ghost works by the gospel in our hearts.

What is necessary for a Christian to believe?

We must believe all things promised us in the gospel, which the articles of our faith teach us.

What are these articles?

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost. I believe in the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading Psalm 34:1–8

I will bless the Lord at all times;

His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul will make its boast in the Lord;

The humble will hear it and rejoice.

O magnify the Lord with me,

And let us exalt His name together.

I sought the Lord, and He answered me,

And delivered me from all my fears.

They looked to Him and were radiant,

And their faces will never be ashamed.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good;

How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
