The Lord’s Day
January 23, 2011
In You our fathers trusted; they trusted and You delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered; in You they trusted and were not disappointed.
(Psalm 22:4, 5)
Prelude
Apostolic Greeting
*Call to Worship Psalm 33:18–21
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope for His lovingkindness,
To deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.
For our heart rejoices in Him, because we trust in His holy name.

Public Confession
O God, please remember that we are but dust; remember Your holy covenant and save us from our sin. We confess that we have not walked rightly before You; we have yielded to temptation. Forgive us and grant us assurance of our standing in Christ. For Your glory, keep us from sin in the days to come.
Words of Comfort and Assurance John 1:11–13
He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Since there is one only divine essence, why do we speak of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost?
We speak in this manner because God has so revealed Himself in His Word that these three distinct persons are the one and only true and eternal God.
When we say, “I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,” what are we asserting?
We are declaring that the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who of nothing made heaven and earth and who likewise upholds and governs the same by His eternal counsel and providence, is for the sake of Christ, His Son, my God and my Father.
What do we mean when we speak of the providence of God?
We mean that by His almighty and everywhere-present power, God upholds and governs heaven, earth, and all creatures so that herbs and grass, rain and drought, fruitful and barren years, meat and drink, health and sickness, riches and poverty, and all things come, not by chance, but by His Fatherly hand.
Pastoral Prayer
*Responsive Reading Psalm 34:9–22
O fear the Lord, you His saints; for to those who fear Him there is no want.
The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; but they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing.
Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who is the man who desires life and loves length of days that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and His ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against evildoers, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
The righteous cry, and the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
He keeps all his bones, not one of them is broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
