The Lord’s Day

January 30, 2011

The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains,

the world, and those who dwell in it.

(Psalm 24:1)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 34:1–3

I will bless the Lord at all times;

His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul will make its boast in the Lord;

The humble will hear it and rejoice.

O magnify the Lord with me,

And let us exalt His name together.

Public Confession

Heavenly Father, we affirm that Christ is our glorious King and our blessed Savior. Forgive our transgressions for His sake, we pray. Glorify our King and Redeemer as You sanctify us by Your grace.

Words of Comfort and Assurance Romans 8:32–34

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

*Declaring Our Faith2 Heidelberg Catechism

Why is the Son of God called “Jesus,” that is, a “Savior”?

Because He saved us and delivered us from our sins; and likewise, because we ought not to seek salvation in any other.

Why is Jesus called “Christ,” that is, “anointed”?

Because He is ordained of God the Father, and anointed with the Holy Ghost to be our chief Prophet and Teacher.

Why are you called a “Christian”?

Because I am a member of Christ by faith, and thus I partake of His anointing, so that I may confess His name and present myself a living sacrifice of thankfulness to Him.

Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading Psalm 37:1–11

Do not fret because of evildoers, be not envious toward wrongdoers.

For they will wither quickly like the grass and fade like the green herb.

Trust in the Lord and do good;

Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.

Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it.

He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him;

Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.

Cease from anger and forsake wrath;

Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.

For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.

Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more;

And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.

But the humble will inherit the land

And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
