The Lord’s Day

June 14, 2009

My God in His lovingkindness will meet me; God will let me look triumphantly upon my foes.

(Psalm 59:10)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 66:1-4

Shout joyfully to God, all the earth;

Sing the glory of His name; make His praise glorious.

Say to God, “How awesome are Your works!”

“Because of the greatness of Your power Your enemies will give feigned obedience to You.”

“All the earth will worship You, and will sing praises to You”;

“They will sing praises to Your name.”

Public Confession

Forgive our transgressions, heavenly Father, even those committed in our ignorance. Cause us to be grieved by our sin, but confident in Your unfailing promise of pardon. We ask that You would cause us to speak words of truth only and dwell on that which is pure. And please give us diligence in pursuit of righteousness.

Words of Assurance           Romans 3:21-24

But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]   Sanctification (continued)

How do we understand our good works?

These works proceed from the good root of faith, and are good and acceptable to God, since they are all sanctified by His grace.

Do these works count toward our justification?

They do not count toward our justification—for by faith in Christ we are justified, even before we do good works. Otherwise they could not be good, any more than the fruit of a tree could be good if the tree is not good in the first place.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading Psalm 97

The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice;

Let the many islands be glad.

Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.

Fire goes before Him, and burns up His adversaries round about.

His lightnings lit up the world; the earth saw and trembled.

The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,

At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

The heavens declare His righteousness,

And all the peoples have seen His glory.

Let all those be ashamed who serve graven images, who boast themselves of idols;

Worship Him, all you gods.

Zion heard this and was glad,

And the daughters of Judah have rejoiced because of Thy judgments, O Lord.

For Thou art the Lord Most High over all the earth;

Thou art exalted far above all gods.

Hate evil, you who love the Lord, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones;

He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Light is sown like seed for the righteous,

And gladness for the upright in heart.

Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones;

And give thanks to His holy name.
