The Lord’s Day

May 17, 2009

As is Your name, O God, so is Your praise to the ends of the earth;

Your right hand is full of righteousness.

(Psalm 48:10)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship                                                   Psalm 106:1–5

Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;

For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Who can speak of the mighty deeds of the Lord,

Or can show forth all His praise?

How blessed are those who keep justice, who practice righteousness at all times!

Remember me, O Lord, in Your favor toward Your people;

Visit me with Your salvation,

That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones,

That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation,

That I may glory with Your inheritance.

Public Confession

O God, knowing that Christ shed His blood for us, we ask You to forgive our many transgressions. Forgive our wicked thoughts and our hateful words. Forgive our lack of charity toward one another. And forgive our lack of zeal for righteousness.

  Words of Comfort and Assurance                          Isaiah 53:4, 5

Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]                                          The Atonement

What did Jesus Christ do as our High Priest?

Jesus Christ presented Himself in our name before His Father, to appease His wrath with full satisfaction by offering Himself on the cross and pouring out His blood for the cleansing of our sins.

What is written in Scripture?

Scripture says that “the chastisement of our peace” was placed on the Son of God and that “we are healed by His wounds.” He was “led to death as a lamb” and “numbered among sinners”; He was condemned as a criminal, though Pilate had declared that He was innocent.

Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading                                                        Psalm 67

God be gracious to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us

That Your way may be known on the earth, Your salvation among all nations.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;

Let all the peoples praise You.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy;

For You will judge the peoples with uprightness and guide the nations on the earth.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;

Let all the peoples praise You.

The earth has yielded its produce; God, our God, blesses us.

God blesses us, that all the ends of the earth may fear Him.
