The Lord’s Day

May 24, 2009

Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you;

He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.

(Psalm 55:22)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 111:1–5

Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,

In the company of the upright and in the assembly.

Great are the works of the Lord;

They are studied by all who delight in them.

Splendid and majestic is His work,

And His righteousness endures forever.

He has made His wonders to be remembered;

The Lord is gracious and compassionate.

He has given food to those who fear Him;

He will remember His covenant forever.

Public Confession

O God, You have given us reason to sing to You with cheerful voices. You have redeemed us in Christ Jesus. He has accomplished our salvation, and in that we rejoice. For His sake, forgive our many transgressions and work in us so that we walk humbly and rightly before You.

  Words of Comfort and Assurance   Isaiah 61:10

I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]      Saving Faith

Is all that is required for our salvation found in Christ?

It must necessarily follow that either all that is required for our salvation is not in Christ or, if all is in Him, then he who has Christ by faith has his salvation entirely.

What about those who claim that Christ is not enough for salvation?

To say that Christ is not enough but that something else is needed as well is a most enormous blasphemy against God—for it then would follow that Jesus Christ is only half a Savior. Therefore we justly say with Paul that we are justified “by faith alone” or by faith “apart from works.”

Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading  Psalm 89:1–8

I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever;

To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth.

For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever”;

“In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.”

“I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant, I will establish your seed forever”

“And build up your throne to all generations.”

The heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;

Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.

For who in the skies is comparable to the Lord?

Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord,

A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones,

And awesome above all those who are around Him?

O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord?

Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
