The Lord’s Day
May 31, 2009
You have
delivered my soul from death, indeed my feet from stumbling,
so that I may
walk before God in the light of the living.
(Psalm 56:13)

Apostolic Greeting
*Call to Worship Psalm 113:1–4
Praise the Lord! Praise, O
servants of the Lord.
Praise the name of the Lord.
Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is high above all
nations;
His glory is above the heavens.

Public Confession
It is our
privilege, O Lord, to bless Your name.
It is our privilege to raise our voices in songs of praise and thanksgiving.
You are, indeed, full of kindness and compassion. Therefore, we also confess to
You our transgressions. We acknowledge that we have sinned against You and seek
Your forgiveness now as we appear in Your presence. Cause us to remember our
sins so that we might also remember Your mercy.
Words of
Comfort and Assurance Isaiah 49:13–15
Shout for joy,
O heavens! And rejoice, O earth! Break forth into joyful shouting, O mountains!
For the Lord has comforted His
people and will have compassion on His afflicted. But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, and the Lord has
forgotten me.” “Can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on
the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.”

*Declaring Our Faith[†] Justification
What does the
apostle Paul teach us about our justification?
The apostle says
that we are justified “freely” or “by grace” through redemption in Jesus
Christ. And therefore we cling to this foundation, which is firm forever,
giving all glory to God, humbling ourselves, and recognizing ourselves as we
are; not claiming a thing for ourselves or our merits and leaning and resting
on the sole obedience of Christ crucified, which is ours when we believe in
him.
In the matter of
justification, is there any benefit to our efforts?
If we had to
appear before God relying—no matter how little—on ourselves or some other
creature, then we would be swallowed up.
Pastoral Prayer
*Responsive
Reading Psalm 96
Sing to the Lord
a new song;
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord,
bless His name;
Proclaim good tidings of His
salvation from day to day.
Tell of His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all
the peoples.
For great is the Lord,
and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all
gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and beauty are in
His sanctuary.
Ascribe to the Lord,
O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord
glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name; bring an
offering, and come into His courts.
Worship the Lord
in holy attire;
Tremble before Him, all the
earth.
Say among the nations, “The Lord
reigns; indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved”;
“He will judge the peoples with equity.”
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
Let the sea roar, and all it contains;
Let the field exult, and all that is in it.
Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the Lord,
For He is coming; for He is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in His
faithfulness.
