The Lord’s Day

November 22, 2009

Upon You I have leaned from before my birth;

You are He who took me from my mother’s womb. My praise is continually of You.

(Psalm 71:6)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 98:1–3

Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things!

His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him.

The Lord has made known His salvation;

He has revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations

He has remembered His steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

  Public Confession

O Lord, pardon our iniquity, for it is great. Cause us to repent and turn away from all our transgressions so that sin may not become a stumbling block to us. Give us a steadfast heart and an obedient spirit; make us worthy of Your name as we rejoice in righteousness. We ask this for Christ’s sake. Amen.

Words of Assurance           Hebrews 10:12–14

Christ, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, “sat down at the right hand of God,” waiting from that time onward “until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.” For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]   The Canons of Dordt: Article 15

What are we to believe concerning those not elected by unto eternal salvation?

Left in the common misery into which, by their own fault, they have plunged themselves, some were not given saving faith and the grace of conversion. Instead, they were left under the judgment of God to be condemned and punished for their unbelief and for all their other sins.

By what term is this doctrine known?

This is the decision of reprobation, which does not make God the author of sin, but rather its fearful, irreproachable, just Judge and Avenger.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading  Psalm 5

Give ear to my words, O Lord;

Consider my groaning.

Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God,

For to You do I pray.

O Lord, in the morning You hear my voice;

In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for You and watch.

For You are not a God who delights in wickedness;

Evil may not dwell with You.

The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes;

You hate all evildoers.

You destroy those who speak lies;

The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of Your steadfast love, will enter Your house.

I will bow down toward Your holy temple in the fear of You.

Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies;

Make Your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction;

Their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue.

Make them bear their guilt, O God;

Let them fall by their own counsels;

Because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against You.

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice;

Let them ever sing for joy, and spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may exult in You.

For You bless the righteous, O Lord; You cover him with favor as with a shield.
