Adult Covenant Children

NOTICE TO CONGREGATION OF SESSION ACTION

Policy Regarding Adult Covenant Children

Adopted May 8, 2007

Introduction

The Session has frequently discussed the status of those members who were originally received when they were infants or young children. Specifically, the issue can reduced to this question: Are such church members required to affirm the membership questions originally posed to their parents? When a parent joins the church, they are required to assume certain covenantal responsibilities for their children. Those obligations are summarized in a series of questions asked of the parents at the time of joining. Now that our ministry is well into its second decade, we are seeing those children who were received upon the promise of their parents reaching adulthood themselves. We have wondered, therefore, if they are automatically to be considered members of the church and, therefore, responsible for keeping the membership vows of the church.

Policy

Given the covenantal nature of church membership, as practiced in this body, it is the decision of the Session that all those who have joined this church as covenant children (and therefore upon the basis of vows originally taken by their parents) will be considered members of this congregation when they reach adulthood. We will not require any covenant child to “join” the church as if he or she is not already a member. We will assume that their status of covenant children contains within it the anticipated maturity of adult membership.

Conclusion

In order to educate the congregation regarding this policy, the elders will begin scheduling meetings with all those covenant children who are approaching adulthood. We will inform them of their status, as explained above.
