Really, How Do I Love Thee?
By Dan Joner

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach . . . ." Whoa! What, you might ask, does a love poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning have to do with a Session report? Has the Session fallen off its collective cry-room rocker and taken to sitting around reading love poems? Well, no, not exactly. But we do spend time talking about love. And this poem by Browning is an apt illustration for this idea. In reading this well-known poem, we can easily visualize the object of such love, an impulse of feelings for someone quite close to us. And so it is that when we think of love, we can easily think of loving those we want to love, not those we ought to love. And even if we do try to love those we ought to love, we can fail to love "to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach." This, then, is what consumes the Session’s thoughts on love. And we have recently given a good deal of thought to this subject.

Blazing a Trail
By James Bordwine, ThD

For the first time in Westminster Presbyterian’s history, the church body has directly sent missionaries out into the world. True, it was only a one-week event, but looking at how incredibly well the project developed so quickly and smoothly, as well as looking at the visible results, it is evident that this is the time in our church’s life that the Lord has called our body to be active in missions work.

A Study in Character: Caleb, Man of a Different Spirit
By James Bordwine, ThD

Promises, by definition, are supposed to be trustworthy. This is a universally recognized truth. If this is true among men, it is certainly true of God. When He makes a promise, He never fails to fulfill it. Regardless of whether His people behave in such a way as to merit His goodness, God always keeps His word. He can do so because He is a God with all power, knowledge, and mercy. It is in the context of one particular promise from God that we are going to study Caleb. God's fulfillment of this promise is the occasion for the disclosure of Caleb's unique character.

Eschatalogical Expectation and the Nature of the Atonement
By James Bordwine, ThD

As I have studied the doctrine of eschatology, I have become convinced that one of the essential elements in developing a proper eschatology is a thoroughly biblical understanding of the atonement provided by Jesus Christ. That may not sound like news to some of you, but I think it is news to the majority of professing evangelicals today. Since the atonement has to do with what Jesus Christ accomplished for our race, it is not difficult to see how one's view of the atonement will affect one's expectation regarding the work of the church and the preaching of the gospel in history.

Creating a Thankful Family
By James Bordwine, ThD

This is a most enjoyable time of year. With Thanksgiving Day approaching, we are giving more thought to the idea of giving thanks. Right after Thanksgiving, we enter the season of Advent and our attention turns to Christmas. We have a desire to reflect upon what has been done for us and conduct ourselves in a manner that honors God.

The Bible teaches that a thankful perspective on life is...

Should we recite the Apostle's Creed?
By James Bordwine, ThD

The title of this article suggests that some are of the opinion that the people of God should not recite the Apostles' Creed during public worship. Concern for what takes place in worship is always commendable. Purity and truthfulness in our worship are paramount goals. It is beneficial, therefore, to question practices like the recitation of creeds. At the same time, it is also helpful to remind ourselves that we are a creedal church, meaning that the Reformed tradition is one in which written statements of belief have been a hallmark of our development. This characteristic alone does not justify the use of any particular creed, but it is important to remember that creeds and confessions have a long and honorable history among the Reformed.
